Sensory Processing Disorder

What is a sensory gym?

A sensory gym is a specialized designed space to help an individual with sensory issues learn to regulate their brain’s negative reactions to external stimuli by developing coping skills for these experiences.  The gym offers a variety of benefits: calming effects, stimulation, socialization, improved focus, motor skills development, cognitive development, and sensory development.

What is Sensory Processing Disorder and how does it relate to Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Sensory processing is the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioral responses.  Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) exists when sensory signals are either not detected or do not get organized into appropriate responses.  According to the STAR Institute, a person with SPD may find it difficult to process and act upon messages received through the senses, which creates challenges in everyday tasks: clumsiness, behavioral problems, anxiety, depression, school failure, and many more issues.

1 in 6 children experience sensory symptoms that may be significant enough to affect aspects of everyday life functions

SPD may occur in each sensory system – visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, vestibular (balance and coordination in space), proprioceptive (muscle/joint movement), or interoception (physiological/physical condition of the body).

Symptoms may vary depending on subtype.  A person may have 1, 2, or all 8  sensory systems involved and 1, 2, 0r 6 subtypes.  There are over 260,000 different patterns of expression of SPD!

Like Autism Spectrum Disorder, SPD is a broad spectrum of severity.

How is SPD related to Autism?

Studies by the STAR Institute suggest that at least 75% of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder have significant syptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder, and probably more depending on how significant symptoms are defined.

However, the reverse is not ture!  Most children with SPD do not have autism.
